i live in Brooklyn, NY, and my road test is in 2 weeks. ive been practicing on a 98 buick century (automatic, not manual) for last few months. the gear shifting light is not working at all. i cant see which gear im in by looking at the dashboard lights. like i cant tell if im in park, reverse, neutral or drive just by looking at the dash. i know what order their in and am ok at shifting to the right gear and getting it right on the first try. (park-reverse-neutral-drive…). my mechanic says its not worth fixing the lights because its way to expensive and i have to replace a whole computer mechanism thing in the dash. i also have a "service engine" light on constantly because the computer in the dash wont reset from the last time i fixed my car, and, once again, the mechanic doesnt sugest fixing it because its wa too expensive and the car drives fine.
Will fail my road test in 2 weeks because of these problems? does the new york city DMV care about such issues on the road test?

In most states, your vehicle must pass a safety inspection, by the examiner, before he'll let you take your road test. Good luck!
As a rule of thumb (and as per my driver's ed instructor) he said using the test driver's ed vehicle is worth it because the DMV testor feels safer since they have their own break pedal, and sometimes steering wheel. The worse shape your car is the more uncomfortable the DMV testor will feel and they are more likely to fail you, but they cannot fail you just based on the looks of your vehicle.
By the way: GOOD LUCK!
YOU GOING TO BE OK AS LONG YOU KNOW WHAT ARE YOU DOING IT
You should borrow the car in the best working condition you can…Bring the owner with you if you can. All your ppwrk must be in order…They do a quick insp. of the car before giving you the road test. They are way more worried about your paperwork being in order… regestration, insurance inspection sticker… If you can't get a better car try to pull it off… try to get through the insp. and test without the examiner finding out about the defect.. clean the car before the test. they will definetly look more closely if the car appears to be a junker or hoopty, or pimp mobile,
