Texas Driver’s License Road Test?

Apparently I can no longer attain a driver’s permit because I am over the age of 18. Fabulous.
Does anyone know how I might get some behind the wheel experience? For those that have recently taken the driver’s test (road, not written): Can you tell me a little bit about the process, what they grade you on, etc.? Do they take you on the public roads?

For me it was a long long time ago…in Texas. The DPS office was in a strip center on the freeway. I remember them making me drive down the feeder road and through the subdivision behind the DPS. I don’t remember much more than that that they made me do. I remember the only thing I didn’t get right on the driving test was signaling in time before an intersection. That wasn’t near enough to fail though.
