I moved from Michigan to Florida for college in July of 2009, and they only require that I live in the state for six months before acquiring residency. Will I need to retake my driving test when I apply for my new license or does it carry over?
My Michigan license does not expire until 2011.

In the state of Florida, a motor vehicle is required by law to be registered within ten days of the owner either becoming employed, placing children in public school, or establishing residency. Registering your motor vehicle goes hand in hand with the titling process.

If your driver’s license is still valid and not expired, the driving test could be waived, meaning you do not have to take it.
You may have to take a written test and they’ll trade your old license for the new one.
Just don’t forget to get your new license before the expiration date or else you might have to start over from scratch.
Full time college students attending school out of state have an exemption. They are allowed to keep their drivers license, plates and sometimes their insurance in their home of record (Michigan, in your case). You are not required to switch everything. Of course if you want to switch you may.
If you have a valid and current license, you only need to take the written test, not the driving test. You’ll have to check with FL law about when or if you must get a FL driver’s license in your situation.
Note: Most insurance companies won’t let you keep your home insurance rates because you may be moving into an area where the driving risk is much greater, say from Tupelo, MS to Los Angeles. I’ll guarantee that your insurance rate will be higher. Also, some states require different minimum coverages that from where you lived before. You’ll have to check to be sure.
