Pure liquid octane (d = 0.702 g/mL) is used as the fuel in a test of a new automobile drive train. How much energy (in kJ) is released by complete combustion of of all the octane in a 20.4 gal fuel tank?

The energy delivered to the drive wheels at 75 mph is 60500 kJ/h. Assuming all the energy is transferred to the wheels, what is the cruising range (in km) of the car on a full tank of gas?

Please help me out

  1. ? ? ? ? says:

from citation, std enthalpy of combustion = -5074 kJ/mol
    and molar mass = 114.23 g/mol

    From google, get 20.4 gal = 77 222 ml
    Soooo,
    77222ml * 0.702g/ml * 1mol/114.23g * 5074kJ/mol = 2.4e6 kJ ? energy in the full gas tank

    2.4e6kJ / 60500kJ/h = 39.9 h

    75mph * 39.9h = 2990 mi

EDIT: Oops, forgot to convert to km
    2990 mi = 4812 km

    Type
    2990 mi = ? km
    20.4 gal = ? ml
    into google!
