It took me all 3 tries before I passed (I think 3 was the max number of tries allowed in any one day). I studied too. There are a lot of multiple choice questions with ever so slightly different answers. They also have at least 3 different versions of the test, so even if you got a copy of one off the internet somewhere, there's no guarantee you would get the same one when you went. I would think all DMVs in California would follow the same procedure and use the same tests, so I don't think it matters where you go, although some may be less busy than others and get you in quicker. Take it somewhere else. Well, I took it in California and passed with -8. They let you miss up to 8, but I'm not sure if that rule changed to only 6 or 7.
