International license in Canada or G2 license?

My Friend is Canadain who live aboard. his canadain G2 license expried.. so when he go back can he Drive with international license till he does the driving test?? is it legal?

The international “license” is not actually a license…it is just a permit…based on the fact that you have a current valid license in your home country. If you do not, the international permit is valueless. See site below and read carefully. He needs to get a new Canadian license while in Canada. that international “license” will not be valid when he goes back overseas either…it is only a translation …to make it easier for foreign police to read his license info…it is based on having an active license in a person’s home country.

There is no such thing as an international licence, as such. It is a permit, which is a translation of the original licence into several languages. If he received his international licence in Canada, and used it with his Canadian licence, it automatically expired the day his Canadian licence expired. The IDP, alone, is just a piece of paper. Producing only that will net a ticket for driving without a licence, not just in Canada, but in any country in the world.

The G2 is the second stage of a graduated driver licence, not a full unrestricted licence. He still has to complete the graduated programme, but has to start over. A novice driver whose licence has been expired must reapply as a new driver and pass the required tests (vision, knowledge, road tests).

In other words, he doesn’t even have an expired licence any longer, he is an unlicenced novice driver.

In addition to the above the international permit being no good is that your friend will have to start the whole process over again if his G2 permit timed out. If your friend had a G permit then the Government of Ontario will have a record of that and he could be issued a new permit.

BTW if your friend gets caught driving without a permit then it is major $$$$$$ for a fine. If your friend has a permit for the country that you are in then that permit is good enough to drive with in Canada.
