For the permit test, it’s 6 wrong and you’re out. I’m not sure about the actual license test. I’m going to take my permit test quite soon.

  4. Driving Instructor (BRAKE!) says:

The permit test is given in different lengths.. The longest test is 48 questions and you may miss 8 or fewer. This test is the usual test given to teens.
If you’re an adult (18 or older) and have had a license in a different state, there’s a 36 question test. You may miss 6 questions.
Those two tests (5 or 6 versions) are the only ones I’m familiar with.

The reason people fail is that laws change or new laws become effective and people don’t stay abreast of the changes. Everyone should pick up a copy of the DMV handbook annually. It’s also available for download on the internet.
One of my favorite questions that appears on EVERY test:
For what must you notify the DMV WITHIN 5 days?
    A. The sale of your car
    B. Complete paint job (color change)
    C. When you add a new driver to your insurance policy

OK, be honest – how’d you do?

  5. Brad D says:

As I remember your are allowed to have 8 wrong answers (of 48) in CA written test.
