I am currently living in Brooklyn, New York but am moving to Rockaway, New Jersey in June of next year. I have my permit from Brooklyn but I wanted to take my road test in Jersey before I move down there. Can that be done? Can I schedule a road test in New Jersey with my New York permit?

Examination Permits For Out-Of-State Drivers
All out-of-state drivers are required to purchase an examination permit within 60 days of becoming a permanent New Jersey resident or when his/her out-of-state license expires, whichever comes first.
Out-of-state drivers who are under 18 years of age and move to New Jersey are subject to this state’s GDL Program. If he/she wishes to apply for a New Jersey license, he/she should follow the steps outlined for special and examination permit holders. Permits may be purchased at any MVC agency upon presenting the required proof of age and 6 Point ID Verification. Applicants may be required to pass a knowledge test, vision screening and road test.
Out-of-state driver licenses must be surrendered when the MVC issues a New Jersey driver license.
Welcome to NJ – Rockaway’s beautiful!
No way. You have to take your test in NY with a NY permit. You cannot take a driver’s test in a state where it is not lawful for you to drive with anyone.
I can’t be sure, but I’m thinking that you must take one in your legal state.
Driver licensing is a state function. You will have to take your road test in NY.
After you move, if you have a license, you may be able to get one from NJ by only taking a written test. t least that is how it works in NY
