My father was a truck driver most of his life. If you're single, it's not a bad way to go to make a living. Today, most make $40-$50k a year. When you have a family, it's a bit harder. I hated being a kid and not having my father around a lot. Yeah, I saw him one or twice a week, but, it's not the same. I ended up going on the truck with him during my summers off from school. That, in a way, sucked too because I was away from all of my friends.
There are plenty of companies that need overnight or round trip drivers. You do not have to be gone all the time just because you have a "CDL" license. I had one for years and delivered intown. My son in law did overnights and was home on weekends. Which is more important to you?
If you go over the road its tough on a family. I have seen relationships that things like that work. I had a friend that had an open marriage, he even had a child in this that he knew wasn't his biologically; that had to be even tougher on the children (why don't I look like dad?) I knew another that his first wife ended up married to a accountant that lived down the street- his second a similar episode- his third was an over the road driver also they did many together, but the lifestyle was wild she meet another. He shot himself dead after having an engine blow in his truck; his child support was high and the financial predicament caused serious depression. Think about driving local if you have a family or are wanting one; over the road can be fun (maybe even become an addiction).
if you have young children, its not a good idea to go otr. youll miss out on all the learning years of thier lives, plays, choruses, open house, parent teacher meetings and all the stuff that makes kids proud to show you what theyve done. if you are in an early relationship with your signifigant other (2-3 yrs or less) its not a good idea either, because the foundation of trust can get shaken to the core, you will wonder what shes doing when she doesnt answer the phone, and she will wonder what and where a lot lizard is. if you decide to go otr, communicate whenever you can. remember, the road will be a new experience for you, but the family is left at home to take care of EVERYTHING. Income?, most companies will start you out at a minimal per mile pay, and if you need to get the things youll need to live on the interstate, (cooler or fridge, food heating element, cb, coffe maker etc., things to make life on the road, comfortable )it can run into some bucks for the first year. you have to support yourself on the road and support your family back home. after the first couple years, pay can be limitless if you get in with a good company. if your family and lifestyle can get along with going otr, i recommend it. its like camping everyday, in another town, and you get to see the country on somebody elses expense. if you have to go local, i would try somewhere like ups, fed ex, or companies of sort, where they do local and otr and you dont have to limit yourself to doing the same runs over and over. my family gets along with my otr job, but then again, my kids are in late teens, and my wife and i are going 30 yrs strong. it was very tough for all of us and everything the first year though. now, im a 4 yr rookie, and life is good. hope this helped, and have a safe trip
If you go OTR, make sure the carrier has passenger insurance. You will want to take your family sometimes. You need to communicate with your family and tell them you may have to be gone for a week or two,or longer. It helps to call your family everyday. If you go local, you will be out for 10 to 12 hrs a day,and may have to work on weekends.Local jobs are usually very physical. Getting those sweet loads ( Drop n Hook ) with a local job has to be earned by climbing the seniority ladder. That can take years with big carriers. The advantage to OTR is when you come home, you are free to be with your familly all day without being exhausted. Quality time. I chose OTR many years ago because I love my country and I never get tired of seeing all of it!!!! As far as being a good income,I bought my own truck about the fifth year of driving. Whatever your decision, be professional, safe, and keep a positive attitude!
Congrats on passing your CDL test. Yes I think it's a good source of income. It will take some time for the family to get used to you being gone, if you become an OTR driver. However, check out your local trucking companies first. You may find one that pays well and your still home at night. Weight all your options and discuss with your family/wife of what would be a good choice for you and your family.
Yes, and I'm right proud of you.
