To become a writer for a magazine like Car and Driver you first need to have a background in journalism. Most of the writers for magazines like "Car and Driver" have been writing for over 20 years and have a degree in journalism. It is a very competitive job there are tons of "want to be" drivers who have the requisite driving skills but not so many with the journalism pedigree. But, to write for a magazine the important thing is the writing.

In other words, you do not need to be a fast racing driver to write for a top magazine you need to be a top writer. It is very very competitive. How many folks are out there who can write who would love to drive fancy cars all day long?

I am not say you can not do it. I am just saying that it takes a lot of work to become a writer for a monthly magazine those are among the most sought after jobs in journalism.

There are many jobs at a magazine. If you want to be a writer, the most important thing is definitely a background in journalism. A lot of writers (pretty sure) will test drive cars on the street, sometimes on the track and write reviews. There are also specific test drivers who test cars on the race track. I believe these drivers are usually hired and paid as contractors. These drivers are usually pro or semi pro drivers, perhaps guys who formerly raced competitively, or race in the lower levels of the sport.

If you're interested in specifically test driving cars, I would suggest going to a pro racing school. There are several out there, Skip barber being the biggest in north america.
