Regardless of previous answers, in the U.K. if you take a test on an automatic vehicle you can only drive an automatic. If you take a test on a manual you can drive either. This is exactly the same in U.S.A.

Licensing tests don’t require auto or manual. Just whatever vehicle you are driving. In driver’s education, its an automatic. However, if you have a manual for your drivers test, then you drive in that. There aren’t any questions or exams having anything to do with the actual vehicle transmission though, just things like blinkers, seat belts, and traffic laws.
