Do you think we should start having elderly people retake the DMV tests over after a certain age?

like after some one turns 70…should they be forced to retake the writen exam and the driving test again? and if so do you think it should be done every year after 70..or just every 5 years? ie at 70, 75,80- then we just revoke their license! and should the same idea go for teen drivers? up in till they reach 25?
sounds good to me…what do other people think of this idea?
i guess there was a few people that did not full read the entire question….i also said we should retest TEENS until they hit 25!!! no discrimination…teen, early 20's and the elderly are the most hazerdous people on the roads!

If we did this, no one over the age of 60 would be driving.

    yes i do….

I feel they should test everyone, every year. Because so many people feel they can drive much better than everyone else. People should be reminded that you should drive defensively instead of aggressively. Not talking on the electronic leash as well and no eating and drinking of anything in the car. Just like it is like in Germany. If caught revoke the license, and impound the car for 3 months.

YES< YES & YES,I think after a certain age the should be tested every year, most of them are a hazard on the road

There are people who can pass any test, and should not be allowed on the roads. There are also people who are good drivers, who panic at tests. The point system for violations allows bad drivers to be removed from the roads. We do not need another test!

A driving license is a privilege, not a right. I think everyone should have to take an electronic test every four years, and have their eyes, ears and reflexes checked on a specific schedule as well. I'm not sure what that would be, thought, as I'm not a doctor.

    Yes!
People lose their reflexes and attention span at different ages. Some people can drive until they are 100, and some need to stop by age 60.
I don't think the written test needs to be retaken, but driving ability tests do! A good practice would be to retest every 4 years after age 60.

Insurance companies will tell you that the most dangerous people on the road are young males between 17 and 25.

Leave old people alone……you will be one one day and then you may find that experience is more than a balance for reaction.

Honestly I think the test or a version of the test should be given every 10 -15 years…………this way no one is discriminating against age and everyone gets a refresher course

It is important that all drivers are competent behind the wheel. While some elderly drivers may be unable to cope with to-days high volume and fast paced highways, I would be more concerned with the number of young drivers (16 – 20) that are killed /injured in driving accidents due most often to their immaturity. Age is only one of many factors to consider. Mental and physical disabilities, past driving record, impaired drivers, etc are others. It would be totally impractical to retest every driver every 3 – 5 years and probably not necessary. Continued / increased police vigilance on the roads to enforce the laws, heavy fines along with an effective demerit point system would rid the roads of large numbers of poor drivers. Also for those caught driving with a suspended or otherwise invalid license there should be a mandatory 30 day jail sentence. And those convicted of driving while drunk should be dealt with even more harshly.
