Do you think it should be a law for anyone over the age of 65 to retake a driver's test?

I have seen so much bad driving when I've been out. People drive under the speed limit… sometimes 10 miles under… some people cut in front of other's or switch lanes without even looking. My boyfriend and I were driving just the other day… this car cut in front of us and almost hit us and was only going about 30 mph, my boyfriend switched lanes and passed them, and it was an old man! We were also in a parking lot and this old man drove in and drove right into the curb! Once you start getting old it becomes harder to accomplish simple things… some old people can't even see over the steering wheel!! Is there anyone who agrees that anyone over the age of 65 should retake their driving test? I think we would notice a decrease in accidents.

No, I think it should be 35…
Then every 5-10 years after that

I've been saying this for a long time… once you get to a certain age (65 sounds good), you should have to pass a driver's test every year, or at least every other year.

ABSOLUTELY!! My mom is 71 and wouldn't fail the test!! Some people should NOT be driving!! I totally agree with mandatory testing! It's not an age discrimination – it's SAFETY!!

yes, i think your right. old ppl need to learn how to drive again!

Nope. If any age group needs to be retested it's those aged 16 to 25. They do a lot more frightening things behind the wheel than the seniors. I have yet to see a senior blast down my residential street at 60 mph, narrowly missing children, do a lawn job, or lay rubber at every traffic signal.

Car insurance premiums are much higher for the 16 to 25 age group. That speaks for itself.

Yes, I'm 76. I live in a retirement community of approximately 9000 residents. Everyday I watch my neighbors, those with canes, walkers, and wheel chairs "hobble" to their vehicles. Once in, most do not buckle up, have trouble backing up, and don't seem to have the strength to turn the steering wheel. On seeing how they walk, I often wonder if they have pressure in the right leg to apply the brakes. When they pull into a parallel parking (2 white lines) space, 1/4 of the time, it's at an angle, especially if the vehicle next to them did the same thing. With turn signals, most don't have energy to put the turn indicator on. I feel that driver's tests should be done every 2 to 5 years. When my wife went in for her retest, she found out she was blind in one eye and DMV turned her down for renewal.

Now, shall we talk about those of age 16 to 25 and their driving habits ?

I think it makes more sense to require drivers under thirty to be tested every couple years or so. Considering that statistically they get into more accidence and get more tickets than any other age group. They also pay the highest insurance rates. Why do you think that is? Seniors on the other hand have the fewest accidents and pay the lowest rates. And they get the fewest tickets. So what do you base your suggestion on? Doesn't sound like you pay much attention to the facts huh?

yes. As you get older, eyesight and hearing get more poor. this is a definate risk to all peole on the road. this law should be mandatory

While it is common fact and sometimes the punchline of many Florida Jokes…. we all need to remember that we too will be 65 one day. I agree that there are lots of older folks who need to admit to themselves that it's time to hang it up and let someone help them drive. Keep in mind that, that is like giving up your independence and freedom…. it's tough stuff to deal with. Teens and young adults have a bad reputation due to lack of experience, but let's not forget the mid range and bulk of our nation's motorists…. the ones who text, send e-mails, conduct business meetings all from the front left seat of their cars while driving…. Every age group has people that SHOULD NOT BE BEHIND the wheel.
