    That depends entirely on the rules for your state, which you didn't mention. So call them and ask, or look up your state web page for dmv and see. CA requires you to make an appointment in advance.

    in texas you can take the written without appt. you just wait to the side at the DMV and they log you into computers. as for the driving test, you usually have to schedule here like 2 days in advance.

    As far as I kow, you always need an appt.ask them.
