Drivers are encouraged to use their turn signals before checking their blind spots and making lane changes in order to make other drivers in the area aware of the intent or need to change lanes. Other drivers should allow the driver space to make a successful lane change. And in heavy traffic, it may be difficult to have a completely clear spot to change lanes. Using turn signals this way helps enforce cooperative, safe driving on everyone’s part.
