My driving test is coming up soon. My question is, when I am backing my car in a straight line, I know I need to look over my right shoulder, but can I also look in the right side mirror, or do I only have to be focused on looking over my shoulder? My driving instructor told me that I can not look in the mirror while backing, only over my shoulder. Is this correct?

I am not from california but many of my out of sate friends had the same outcome as me. You are supposed to put your right hand on the back of the Passenger side headrest and look over you right shoulder to straight back. a tip tho. i glanced with my eyes moving only not my head. into the Passenger side mirror and the rear view mirror when the instructor wasn't looking
Listen to your instructor, your out side mirror has a limited view whereas looking over your shoulder you will see more and your peripheral vision will pick up any movement outside your direct line of sight.
Look over your right shoulder as well as using your mirrors……
When backing, one has to be a bit of a contortionist. Not only do we have to turn and look back, but we must also steal quick glances at the mirrors on both sides. All the while we have to turn the wheel properly and step on the correct pedal. That is why we must proceed very slowly and make sure that the path is clear, since the visibility is more limited.
All the best.
